This article discusses how campus police and internal auditors join forces to deter fraud.
Abstract
The article describes the partnership between campus police and internal audit departments at the University of West Florida. Both elements ensure compliance with laws, rules, policies, and procedures. Occasionally what begins as an administrative audit turns out to be a criminal matter or vice-versa. If the campus police and auditors are working together, the investigation benefits from the expertise from two perspectives. The article describes advantages and drawbacks to joint working and evaluates parallel administrative and criminal investigations. Suggestions to make a police/auditor investigative partnership successful include: (1) periodic meetings and detailed notes; (2) coordination of tasks to be performed; (3) determination of interview settings; (4) establishment of files for each witness; and (5) duplication and cross-referencing of files.
