RESULTS OF A PROJECT DESIGNED TO IDENTIFY THE PERCEPTIONS OF THE PUBLIC AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSONNEL ON VARIOUS CRIME AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE CONDITIONS AND ROLES AS THEY RELATE TO CRIME DETERRENCE AND PREVENTION.
Abstract
THE RESEARCH DESIGN OF THIS PROGRAM INCLUDES A COMBINATION OF SURVEY RESEARCH, OBSERVATION, SEARCH OF THE LITERATURE AND EXPERT OPINION. IN SURVEYS OF REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLES OF 937 MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC AND 1,266 OPERATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSONNEL IN CALIFORNIA COMPLETED IN THE SPRING OF 1972, PERCEPTIONS WERE IDENTIFIED ON SUCH AREAS AS THE IMPACT OF CRIME AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND GOALS FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE POSITIONS. THE SURVEY ALSO SOLICITED INFORMATION ON VALUES OF THE PUBLIC AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSONNEL, POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS ISSUES, SENTENCING AND CORRECTIONAL ISSUES, AND THE DESIRABILITY AND PROBABILITY OF CERTAIN CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSONNEL BEHAVIOR IN SPECIFIC SITUATIONS. FINDINGS AND ANALYSES OF THE RESULTS ARE SUMMARIZED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
