Abstract
Both symbolic and practical functions are important when designing a courtroom. The way the design of the courtroom communicates social and judicial values is discussed. Space management for judges, court reporters, clerks, bailiffs, witnesses, plaintiffs, defendants, attorneys, juries, and spectators needs to play an important role in the design. The shape, configuration, size, height, and traditional features are all discussed as elements in the modern courtroom design. Other elements addressed are circulation within the courtroom, sightlines in the courtroom, acoustics, heating, ventilation, lighting, and courtroom technology. 8 figures and 1 note
