Abstract
The first chapter offers the new or relatively new chief advice on taking control of his department and implementing his agenda. Chapters 2 and 3 provide solid advice for leading a law enforcement organization and emphasize the extreme importance of role modeling the behavior that the leader expects of his people. Chapter 4 examines the requirements for a productive relationship with the chief's top staff and analyzes what is required to bolster a weak staff and further strengthen a strong one. Chapters 5 and 6 explore the multi-faceted relationship a chief has with his employees, delving into what is needed to keep those relations positive through good times and bad; it also covers the law enforcement chief executive's responsibilities to his people. Chapter 7 provides the chief with guidelines for managing his relations with the various factions that make-up the community, while chapter 8 discusses best practices for a chief to get along with his boss. Chapter 9 explores discipline and emphasizes the chief's role in the process. Chapter 10 provides help for deciding on a course of action when things go wrong. Chapter 11 focuses on law enforcement leaders dealing with the media. Chapter 12 focuses on the chief's personal and professional life. Chapter 13 summarizes the real-world experiences of successful law enforcement bosses. Chapter 14 offers common sense guidelines for staying emotionally, mentally, and physically healthy while performing in a difficult job.
