RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF DETROIT POLICEMEN TAKEN AFTER A RACE RIOT TO ANALYZE THEIR PERCEPTIONS OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY AND OF THE CAUSES OF THE RIOT.
Abstract
THE STUDY REVEALED THAT POLICE ATTITUDES TOWARD THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EFFECTIVE POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAM WERE PREDOMINATELY NEGATIVE. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE TO REDEFINE THE POLICE ROLE, INCREASE POLICE EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAMS, EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OLD AND NEW POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAMS, AND REWARD INNOVATIONS IN COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAMS.
