The primary role of the Aborigine Liaison Unit, established in 1980, is to improve relationships among Aborigines, police, and the general public in New South Wales, Australia.
Abstract
A principal task of the unit is to modify negative attitudes that obstruct positive relationships between Aborigines and the community, including the police. Negative racial attitudes develop from cultural conditioning and limited personal experience. To modify such influences among police officers, the unit has developed a training module that identifies sterotyped negative attitudes toward Aborigines and presents material intended to modify these attitudes and improve relations between the police and Aborigines. The unit developed an experimental educational program for high school students that dealt with the economic and social conditions of ethnic minorities, ethnic minorities and the concept of who is Australian, media treatment of Aborigines, and the law and Aborigines. The unit is preparing to present similar programs to school children in other jurisdictions of New South Wales. 1 footnote.
