DISCUSSION OF THE RELIABILITY OF THE CRIME STATISTICS PUBLISHED ANNUALLY BY THE FEDERAL AND STATE CRIMINAL POLICE OFFICES AND A COMPARISON OF REPRESENTATIVE CRIME STATISTICS FOR 1963 AND 1973.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR ASSERTS THAT THE STATISTICS DO NOT ACCURATELY REFLECT CRIMINALITY IN WEST GERMANY BECAUSE AN UNDETERMINED NUMBER OF CRIMES GO UNREPORTED. HE ALSO CRITICIZES THE DESIGN OF FEDERALLY FUNDED RESEARCH TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF UNREPORTED CRIME USING A SURVEY OF A CROSS SECTION OF THE POPULATION. THE METHODS OF COMPILING AND PROCESSING POLICE CRIME STATISTICS HAVE BEEN MADE MORE UNIFORM AND ERROR-FREE SINCE 1973, HOWEVER. IN ADDITION, THE STATISTICS HAVE BEEN MORE COMPREHENSIVE SINCE 1971 BY THE INTEGRATION OF DATA ON THE CASES AFTER THEY ARE TURNED OVER TO THE PROSECUTOR AND THE COURTS. --IN GERMAN
