Abstract
The book focuses on providing information relevant to the preparation for promotion to sergeant, lieutenant, and captain. The opening chapter describes field operations, which involve patrol, crime investigation, traffic, youth work, vice control, and emergencies. An overview of each of the functions begins with a survey of its important principles, followed by questions and explanations. A chapter on supervision contains questions, problems, answers, and solutions that pertain to leadership, direction, discipline, training, motivation and morale, and work problems. A chapter on management contains questions, problems, answers, and solutions that deal with the management of personnel. Issues addressed are selection and assignment, grievances, evaluation and rating, internal coordination, and external relations. A chapter on criminal law contains likely exam questions and answers that pertain to law procedures and evidence. In chapter 6, questions and answers address Federal matters that affect police, as contained in the U.S. Constitution, U.S. Supreme Court decisions, and Federal commission reports. Chapter 7 focuses on background subjects, namely, vocabulary and grammar; a syllogism exercise; a practical vocabulary exercise; a paragraph formation exercise; paragraph analysis; and graphs, tables, and charts. Chapter 8, which the author recommends the user read before exploring the other chapters, provides guidelines for organizing study efforts and study groups. A 32-item bibliography
