IN THE SUMMER OF 1971, SO MANY NON-DUTCH, ITINERANT YOUNG PEOPLE WERE SLEEPING IN THE VONDELPARK IN AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS, WITH OFFICIAL PERMISSION, THAT A SPECIAL POLICE DETACHMENT HAD TO BE ASSIGNED TO KEEP ORDER.
Abstract
THE LOOSE BEHAVIOR OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE, THEIR USE OF DRUGS, AND THEIR RADICAL LEFTIST TALK ANTAGONIZED THE CONSERVATIVE-MINDED DUTCH POLICEMEN. THEY FELT THEMSELVES CONFRONTED WITH THE PRODUCTS OF EDUCATIONAL EXPERIMENTATION, AND DID NOT LIKE WHAT THEY SAW AND HEARD. ALSO, THE FORMING OF A SPECIAL DETACHMENT OF POLICE FOR EXTENDED DUTY IN THE VONDELPARK SMACKED OF FAVORITISM AND TENDED TO CAUSE DISSATISFACTION IN THE REMAINDER OF THE POLICE FORCE. --IN DUTCH
