Larvae of Parasarcophaga ruficornis (Fabricius) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) were reared on tissues from rabbits administered different doses of phencyclidine to study the effects of this drug on insect development.
Abstract
Three rabbits were given 3.66, 7.31, and 14.62 mg of phencyclidine via ear vein infusion to produce different concentrations of phencyclidine in tissues. A fourth control rabbit received only normal saline by ear vein infusion. Immediately following death, a blood sample was taken from each rabbit and frozen for later analysis of drug content. In addition, liver samples were obtained from each rabbit and frozen for later analysis. No significant differences in larval growth were observed among colonies, although the duration of the nonfeeding portion of the third instar was shorter for larvae fed on tissues containing phencyclidine. Mortality during the larval stage was directly related to the phencyclidine dose administered. Puparial stage durations were longer for colonies fed on tissues containing phencyclidine, and the presence of phencyclidine was detected in larvae from all colonies fed on tissues from rabbits receiving the drug using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. 15 references, 2 tables, and 1 figure
