AN OVERVIEW OF THE ACTIVITIES, STAFF, MEMBERSHIP, OBJECTIVES, AND SERVICES OF THESE GROUPS WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, CHILD CARE SERVICES, AND PRACTICAL SUPPORT TO PRISONER'S WIVES.
Abstract
THE BASIC PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE GROUPS WAS TO BRING TOGETHER WOMEN FACING SIMILAR PROBLEMS ARISING FROM BRINGING UP A FAMILY WHILE THEIR HUSBANDS WERE IN PRISON. TWO TYPES OF SUPPORT ARE PROVIDED - THAT GIVEN BY THE OTHER WOMEN IN THE GROUP, AND SUPPORT PROVIDED BY VOLUNTEERS AND PROBATION OFFICERS. OTHER ACTIVITIES INCLUDE TEACHING PRACTICAL SKILLS, AND PROVIDING PRACTICAL SUPPORT SUCH AS AID IN FINDING HOUSING OR RECEIVING BACK PAYMENTS FROM SOCIAL SECURITY. THE STRUCTURE OF THE GROUPS, FUNDING, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WIVES, VOLUNTEERS, AND PROBATION OFFICERS, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE GROUPS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
