This document provides materials presented at two convocations sponsored by the National Federation of Priests' Councils in 1979 and 1980 which focused on the issue of prison reform.
Abstract
Topics addressed at the convocations included theology in prison, intervening on behalf of prisoners, ministry in county jails, community-based corrections, and ministry to incarcerated women. Additional subjects presented were socioeconomic aspects of crime and imprisonment, reducing the prison population, and the death penalty. The fact that ministry involves both service and advocacy was emphasized at both convocations. Trends such as reinstituting the death penalty and building more prisons were deemed to be dangerous, and resistance to these movements was emphasized. Information regarding participants, resources, and relevant legislation is appended.
