THE 'SCHOLARLY PRODUCTIVITY' OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE GRADUATE PROGRAMS IS ASSESSED IN TERMS OF THE FREQUENCY WITH WHICH ARTICLES BY FACULTY MEMBERS ARE PUBLISHED IN PROFESSIONAL JOURNALS.
Abstract
TEN CRIME-RELATED JOURNALS WERE SELECTED ON THE BASIS OF RANKINGS BY THE HEADS OF THE 52 GRADUATE DEPARTMENTS UNDER STUDY. THE JOURNALS WERE SEARCHED FOR A 5-YEAR PERIOD (JULY 1972 TO JUNE 1977), AND EACH ARTICLE CONTRIBUTED BY A FULL-TIME FACULTY MEMBER OF ONE OF THE 52 PROGRAMS WAS NOTED. ON THE BASIS OF THE NUMBER OF ARTICLES CONTRIBUTED, EACH PROGRAM WAS ASSIGNED A PRODUCTIVITY RANK, WHICH WAS THEN ADJUSTED FOR FACULTY SIZE. THE TOP PRODUCTIVITY RANK (BOTH INITIAL AND SIZE-ADJUSTED) BELONG TO THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT ALBANY, WHICH HAS 13 FACULTY MEMBERS AND AVERAGED 2 ARTICLES PER FACULTY MEMBER. THE LOWEST ADJUSTED PRODUCTIVITY RANK (33) BELONGS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT, WITH 14 FACULTY MEMBERS AND 0.071 PUBLICATION PER FACULTY MEMBER. JOHN JAY COLLEGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, WHICH HAS THE LARGEST FACULTY (50), AVERAGED 0.46 PUBLICATION PER FACULTY MEMBER FOR AN ADJUSTED PRODUCTIVITY RANK OF 19. ADJUSTING THE PRODUCTIVITY RANKS FOR FACULTY SIZE CHANGED THE RANKS OF SOME SCHOOLS, MOST OBVIOUSLY FOR JOHN JAY COLLEGE, WHICH MOVED FROM SECOND TO NINETEENTH PLACE. OTHER SCHOOLS MOVED UP IN THE RANKS WHEN FACULTY SIZE WAS ACCOUNTED FOR. PRODUCTIVITY RATINGS SHED LIGHT ON ONE ASPECT OF ACADEMIC ENDEAVOR AND SHOULD BE DETERMINED AGAIN AFTER CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS HAVE HAD MORE TIME TO STABILIZE. TABLES SHOWING THE JOURNALS STUDIES AND THE PRODUCTIVITY RANKINGS ARE INCLUDED, TOGETHER WITH A LIST OF REFERENCES. (LKM)
