EVALUATION OF THE DEFINITION OF 'PROFESSIONAL THIEF' AS IT IS USED IN CONTEMPORARY CRIMINOLOGY.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT THE CONCEPT OF PROFESSIONAL THEFT IS INADEQUATE AND MISLEADING AND TENDS TO CONFUSE, MORE THAN CLARIFY, THE UNDERSTANDING OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR PATTERNS. CITED IS THE LACK OF CONSENSUS AMONG CRIMINOLOGISTS AS TO WHAT CONSTITUTES PROFESSIONAL STATUS AND THE BOUNDARIES OF THE TERM 'THEFT'. THE AUTHOR PROPOSES A RESEARCH APPROACH THAT WOULD CONCENTRATE ON THE PROCESS BY WHICH AN INDIVIDUAL BECOMES COMMITTED TO A CRIMINAL CAREER. THE STRUCTURE OF THIS CAREER WOULD ALSO BE EXPLORED. A LIST OF REFERENCES IS PROVIDED.
