THE PRINCIPAL REQUIREMENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS OF THE PROGRESSIVE ENTRY DETECTION SYSTEM ARE DISCUSSED, INCLUDING SYSTEM COMPONENTS, DISPLAY METHODS, AND A TECHNIQUE FOR SCREENING NUISANCE ALARMS.
Abstract
THE METHOD SELECTED FOR MINIMIZING NUISANCE ALARMS WAS PREDICATED UPON THE ASSUMPTION THAT NO SINGLE SENSOR ALARM WOULD BE CONSIDERED REAL. INSTEAD A PROCESSING UNIT WAS DEVISED WHICH WOULD MONITOR AN INWARD PROGRESSION THROUGH RINGS, A, B, AND C, IF OCCURRING WITHIN A GIVEN PERIOD. HOWEVER, ALL ALARMS ARE DISPLAYED ON A GEOGRAPHIC DISPLAY MAP AND CAN BE RESPONDED TO ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS IF NEEDED. THE SYSTEM CONCEPT IS TO DERIVE THE MAXIMUM INFORMATION FROM THE RAW DATA PROVIDED BY THE INDIVIDUAL SENSOR ALARM; IT TREATS ALARMS THAT SHOW AN INTRUDER MOVING AWAY FROM OR PARALLEL TO THE CENTER AS NOT IMMEDIATELY SERIOUS. THE SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED WITH REFERENCE TO SENSORS, RELAY METHOD, ANNUNCIATOR SYSTEM, DISPLAY METHODS, AND ALARM DISPLAY. THE TERM 'THREAT' IS DEFINED AS A PENETRATION FROM WITHOUT BY ONE OR MORE SEMI-SKILLED HUMAN INTRUDERS ON FOOT. SYSTEM CHARACTERISTICS ARE CONSIDERED AND DESIGN CRITERIA ARE EXAMINED. THE SYSTEM WAS CREATED ORIGINALLY FOR MILITARY USE BUT CAN BE APPLIED FOR CIVILIAN SECURITY. IT IS BEST SUITED FOR USE IN ORGANIZATIONS OR BUILDINGS; GUARDS ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO ALL AREAS; AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM DISRUPTION OF WORKING FORCE FOR SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS IS DESIRED; AND ADEQUATE REAL ESTATE IS AVAILABLE TO PERMIT LATERAL SEPARATION OF THE CONCENTRIC RINGS. THE SYSTEM IS SUITED FOR PROTECTING COMMERICAL AREAS AND EVEN FOR A SINGLE BUILDING. PLEASE SEE ALSO NCJ 38864, 52569, 57707-57713, AND 57715-57726. (PRG)
