The concept of public safety as presently practiced was initiated at the University of Georgia in July 1969; the underlying philosophy is an all-encompassing program that meets the full spectrum of law enforcement and safety needs of the academic community.
The University of Georgia's Police Department continuously evaluates the needs of the university in relation to department resources. The department is committed to the university's three- pronged mission of teaching, research, and service. All police officers either have completed academic degrees or are taking undergraduate or graduate courses leading to academic degrees in various disciplines. The department has its own active research effort to develop new ideas and procedures for more effectively delivering law enforcement services to the campus community. In addition to the Police Department, the University of Georgia has an Environmental Safety Services Department that oversees radiation safety, hazardous waste, laboratory safety, environmental health, asbestos coordination, accident prevention, and fire inspection and training. The university also has an emergency management agency.
