AN EXTENSIVE STUDY TO DETERMINE IF THERE WERE ANY DIFFERENCES IN THE QUALITY OF JUSTICE DISPENSED BY BLACK AND WHITE JUDGES WHEN DEALING WITH BLACK AND WHITE DEFENDANTS.
Abstract
THE STUDY DISCLOSED THAT BLACK JUDGES WERE HARSHER ON BLACK DEFENDANTS THAN ON WHITE DEFENDANTS -- BUT SO WERE WHITE JUDGES. NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND BETWEEN THE BACKGROUNDS OR BEHAVIORS OF BLACK JUDGES AND WHITE JUDGES. DISCREPANCIES WERE FOUND BETWEEN THE TREATMENT AFFORDED BLACK DEFENDANTS AND WHITE DEFENDANTS, BUT THE RACE OF THE JUDGE WAS NOT RELATED TO DEFENDANT TREATMENT. 'METRO CITY' WAS NOT IDENTIFIED.
