THESE THREE PAPERS ADDRESS PROBLEMS ARISING FROM THE IMPOSITION OF THE SENTENCE OF LIFE IMPRISONMENT IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY AND SUGGEST REFORMS.
Abstract
THE FIRST PAPER REVIEWS THE GERMAN EXPERIENCE WITH LIFE IMPRISONMENT AS WELL AS THE DEATH PENALTY. INMATE PERCEPTIONS, DRAWN FROM RECENT GROUP DISCUSSION EXPERIENCES ARE ANALYZED, AND PROPOSALS FOR LEGISLATIVE REFORM ARE SET FORTH. IN THE SECOND, THE AUTHOR EXAMINES LIFE IMPRISONMENT IN A CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION FOR WOMEN BY ANALYZING INMATE PROFILES AND BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS AND INMATE RESPONSES TO IMPRISONMENT OVER TIME. VARIOUS ARGUMENTS AGAINST LIFE IMPRISONMENT ARE PRESENTED IN THE THIRD PAPER, WHICH ALSO DEALS WITH WITH INDETERMINATE SENTENCING, CONDITIONAL RELEASE, AND APPEALS FOR CLEMENCY.
