Abstract
NIJ sponsors research relevant to criminal justice policy and the goals of local criminal justice agencies. One research focus has been the extent and causes of prison overcrowding, along with the feasibility of various sanctions that can be used as alternatives to imprisonment. NIJ research has also examined the psychological and financial impacts of crime on its victims, as well as the nature and effectiveness of various programs designed to relieve such needs. The criminal justice system's handling of habitual offenders is another research focus. An aspect of this research has addressed the effect of drug abuse on habitual criminal behavior. Domestic violence has been targeted by NIJ research, with particular attention to how the police might best respond to such incidents. Fear of crime, as well as crime prevention, has been an NIJ concern. This research has identified ways in which citizens' fear of victimization can be reduced to improve the quality of their lives.
