Abstract
Domestic violence is a serious crime that often results in serious injury and even death. The behaviors that are part of domestic violence include emotional and psychological control, economic control, threats, and acts of physical violence. Being in a relationship with an abusive partner -- and surviving -- requires skill and resourcefulness. Safety planning is a process of identifying options, evaluating those options, and developing a detailed plan to reduce the risk when confronted with the threat of harm or actual harm. Abusers often escalate their violence during periods of separation. A safety plan can reduce the risk of being harmed. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24 hours a day to provide immediate crisis intervention, information, and referrals. Local domestic violence programs provide free and confidential assistance to persons in abusive relationships and their children. Domestic violence advocates may be available through a local domestic violence program or through the court. In the Federal workplace, supervisors can help implement a safety plan by using a variety of management tools available in the Federal personnel system. Other resources are the security office, the Employee Assistance Program, the union, co-workers, human resources office, and health unit. There are powerful tools to protect employee safety and help them rebuild their lives. These are annual leave, sick leave, sick leave for family medical care, leave transfer, and advanced sick or annual leave. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 gives employees nationwide the option to use up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave during any 12-month period for specified family and medical needs. Alternative work arrangements, such as telecommuting, temporary job assignment, and work schedule flexibility, can offer safety and support. 5 references
