THE AUTHOR MAINTAINS THAT STUDENT UNREST STEMS FROM ANTIDEMOCRATIC TEACHING AND ADMINISTRATION WITHIN OUR SCHOOLS AND FROM SCHOOL-AGGRAVATED TENSIONS FROM THE LARGER SOCIETY OVER ISSUES SUCH AS RACIAL CONFLICT.
Abstract
TENSIONS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE RESULT OF CONFLICTS BETWEEN BASIC DEMOCRATIC IDEALS AND TWO OPERATING REALITIES OF AMERICAN EDUCATION - AN AUTHORITY-CENTERED SYSTEM OF TEACHING AND SCHOOL GOVERNANCE AND AN UNREAL AND DISTORTED CONTENT-PRESENTATION OF AMERICAN SOCIAL AND POLITICAL REALITIES. THREE APPROACHES ARE SUGGESTED FOR DEALING WITH AND CHANGING EXISTING CONDITIONS, INCLUDING THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW PROGRAMS, EXPERT TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE IN CRISIS MANAGEMENT AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION FOR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS, AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, AND PROVIDING FOR STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES.
