This toolkit is intended for use in developing evaluation designs for restorative practices in resolving conflicts in community-based, school-based, and/or justice contexts.
Abstract
The toolkit consists of four major parts: "Background Information," "Suggestions for Analysis," "Survey Part One: Short Answer," and "Survey Part Two: Long Answer." The section on background information introduces the reader to the applicability of human rights in youths' experiences. Discussed in turn are the principles embedded in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the United Nations Basic Principles of Restorative Justice and the Integration of Rights-Based Restorative justice. The second section offers recommendations for the use and analysis of the evaluation surveys that follow. In the sections on "Survey Part One" and "Survey Part Two," tools are provided for use following restorative practice processes/conferences. The surveys provided in part one are short; they are intended to be administered after the conference at the community/school hosting site. The set of surveys in part two are based largely on the shorter tools, but are longer and intended for use in a telephone or in-persons interviewer. Both survey sets reflect the language and principles of rights-based restorative practice. This toolkit is offered as a starting point for the evaluation process. Depending on the particular program for which it is used, it may be modified in length and scope.
