NEW YORK CITY PILOT PROGRAM DEMONSTRATES THAT A SYSTEM OF TELEPHONE ALERTS CAN EFFECTIVELY CONTROL UNNECESSARY COURT APPEARANCES BY POLICE WITNESSES.
Abstract
DURING THIS PROGRAM, POLICE WITNESSES REMAIN ON DUTY AND APPEAR IN COURT ONLY WHEN NOTIFIED BY TELEPHONE THAT THEIR CASES ARE READY TO PROCEED AND THEIR PRESENCE IS NECESSARY. THE AUTHOR EVALUATES PROJECT DATA AND CONCLUDES THAT NEARLY 68 PERCENT OF UNNECESSARY COURT APPEARANCES, A SAVING OF ALMOST $4 MILLION ANNUALLY, COULD BE ELIMINATED BY INSTITUTING THE PROGRAM.
