The use of sequential mediation, in which severely distressed divorcing couples are seen individually, provides a therapeutic and effective intervention.
Abstract
While the prevailing practice in divorce mediation is to have the partners interface in the presence of the mediator, in some cases this can be counterproductive in achieving the goal of procuring agreement with the least trauma possible. In those cases where the couple's interpersonal chemistry is explosive or inhibiting, the calmer atmosphere of the individual setting permits the parties to present their cases in a less anxious and more coherent and dispassionate manner. This can speed the process because there is no time wasted on refereeing the couple's arguments. Moreover, the mediator can reframe and strategically process the information passing between the parties in a way that diffuses hostility, encourages reasonableness, and emphasizes the constructive aspect of each party toward the other. In this context, individuals are more apt to respond to the mediator's suggestions and compromise solutions with agreement. When a solution is reached, the couple can be reunited in a more positive setting where both feel relief that the issue has been resolved.
