This document contains proceedings from an October 1991, conference sponsored by the Australian Institute of Criminology.
Abstract
The conference dealt with such issues as methods of predicting dangerous behavior, the use of preventive detention, the balance between an offender's civil liberties and the public safety, and options for the management of serious violent offenders in Australia. This volume discusses the problems faced by courts and criminal justice practitioners in dealing with offenders who have personality disorders and reveals the inadequacies of a system which led to the controversial Community Protection Act 1990, passed by the legislature of Victoria. Other issues covered here include the treatment of violent offenders in prison, principles of sentencing, and the process of review prior to release. Chapter references
