THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SOCIAL SCIENCE PROGRAM TO SUPPLEMENT THE POLICE TECHNICAL TRAINING IN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
Abstract
SITUATIONAL TRAINING PLACED THE TRAINEES IN FACE-TO-FACE ENCOUNTERS TO INCREASE THEIR ABILITIES TO DEAL WITH PEOPLE AND HANDLE LEGAL PROBLEMS. THE TRAINEES WERE ENCOURAGED TO TRY OUT ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS. A FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF THE PARTICIPANTS AND A CONTROL GROUP EXAMINED COMPLAINTS AND PERFORMANCE AND INDICATED THAT THE PROGRAM HAD IMPROVED POLICE BEHAVIOR. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT CRITERIA BE ESTABLISHED FOR DETERMINING PROPER POLICE BEHAVIOR, THE OLD TECHNIQUE OF FIELD SUPERVISOR EVALUATION BE ABANDONED, POLICE OFFICERS WITH SOCIAL SCIENCE EDUCATION BE USED AS INSTRUCTORS IN TRAINING PROGRAMS, GUIDELINES FOR RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING BE ESTABLISHED, AND SELECTIVE RECRUITMENT OF POLICE OFFICERS BEGIN.
