TO IMPROVE COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE POLICE FORCE AND RESEARCHERS SO THAT THEY MIGHT KEEP PACE WITH CHANGES IN SOCIETY, A STEERING COMMITTEE WAS APPOINTED IN 1975 BY THE UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM IN THE NETHERLANDS.
Abstract
IT IS THE COMMITTEE'S TASK TO STIMULATE SOCIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF THE POLICE FORCE AND TO CREATE AN OPTIMAL CLIMATE FOR POSSIBLE RESEARCH. THE COMMITTEE COORDINATES PROJECTS AND KEEPS TRACK OF THEIR PROGRESS. ALTHOUGH THE COMMITTEE DOES NOT HAVE THE IMMEDIATE RESPONSIBILITY TO CONDUCT RESEARCH THEMSELVES, IT DOES INTERVIEW MUNICIPAL CHIEFS OF POLICE, POLICE COMMISSIONERS, AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE POLICE TO DISCOVER WHAT PROBLEMS THE POLICE FORCE WANTS TO TACKLE. THESE AREAS ARE CONSIDERED IMPORTANT: (1) COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE AND ITS ROLE IN POLICE TRAINING, (2) THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE POLICE AND THE COMMUNITY, (3) POLICE POLICY CONCERNING MINORITIES, (4) THE REORGANIZATION OF THE POLICE FORCE, AND (5) THE SHORTAGE OF POLICEMEN AND RISING CRIMINALITY.
