THIS VOLUME, THE FIRST OF A TWO VOLUME SERIES ON DRUGS, CONCERNS ITSELF WITH AN OVERVIEW OF THE UNIVERSAL USE OF PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGS.
Abstract
TOBACCO, ALCOHOL, CANNABIS, OPIUM, STIMULANTS AND HALLUCINOGENS ARE EACH EXAMINED IN DEPTH. THE REMAINDER OF THIS BOOK INCLUDES A VARIETY OF ARTICLES WHICH DEAL WITH VARIOUS ASPECTS OF DRUG ABUSE. THERE IS A CROSSCULTURAL COMPARISON OF DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE IN LITERATE AND NON-LITERATE COUNTRIES AND A CASE STUDY OF ALCOHOL USE AMONG RURAL GREEKS. A CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGIST LOOKS AT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE HIPPIE CULTURE AND A PHYSICIAN EXAMINES DRUG USAGE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. ARTICLES ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MIND-ALTERING DRUGS AND CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR, AND LEGISLATORS' ATTITUDES TOWARD THE DRUG PROBLEM AND MEANS OF HANDLING IT WILL BE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE PART OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. WHILE NOT INTENDED AS AN EXHAUSTIVE STUDY OF THE SUBJECT, SOCIETY AND DRUGS WILL SERVE AS A USEFUL REFERENCE WORK FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN UNDERSTANDING THE PERPLEXITIES OF DRUG USAGE. (SNI ABSTRACT)
