PAPER OFFERS AN OVERVIEW OF CONSIDERATIONS INVOLVED IN THE APPLICATION OF CORRECTIONS EDUCATION.
Abstract
ANNUAL INCREASES IN THE CRIME RATE AND THE RECURRING CYCLE OF CRIME, INCARCERATION, AND RECIDIVISM GIVE RISE TO THE NEED FOR MORE EFFECTIVE HABILITATION OF INMATES, BOTH JUVENILE AND ADULT. EDUCATION(ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL) IS A VITAL COMPONENT OF THE TOTAL TREATMENT PROCESS. IT IS A KNOWN FACT AMONG CORRECTIONAL PROFESSIONALS THAT THE MAJORITY OF OFFENDERS HAVE DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL BEFORE THE AGE OF SIXTEEN AND, IN ADDITION, HAVE HAD AN UNSTABLE WORK HISTORY. CORRECTIONAL EDUCATION, HOWEVER, LABORS UNDER SOME DIFFICULT AND SPECIAL PROBLEMS. IT MUST SERVE THE DIVERSE AND EXTREME NEEDS OF A VERY HETEROGENEOUS GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO OFTEN SUFFER FROM SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL HANDICAPS. IN OTHER WORDS, CORRECTIONAL/EDUCATION MUST APPEAL TO STUDENTS OF ALL AGES. IT MUST PROVIDE EDUCATION ON ALL LEVELS FROM BASIC AND REMEDIAL TO COLLEGE. IT MUST FULFILL ACADEMIC, VOCATIONAL, AND SOCIAL NEEDS. IT MUST BE ABLE TO MOTIVATE INMATE-LEARNERS WHO FREQUENTLY BRING TO THE CORRECTIONAL CLASSROOM A RECORD OF EDUCATIONAL FAILURE.(AUTHOR ABSTRACT)....BDS
