This FY 1997 annual report of the Federal Bureau of Prisons presents information and statistics on 1997 achievements and activities as well as objectives for FY 1998.
Abstract
An overview of the Bureau's FY-1997 accomplishments is presented according to the Bureau's six national goals. The goal of population management involves proactive management to ensure safe and secure operations. The goal of human resource management involves the development of a competent and representative workforce that meets the organization's needs up to and beyond the year 2000. The goal of security and facility management involves the maintenance of facilities in operationally sound conditions and in compliance with security, safety, and environmental requirements. The goal of correctional leadership and effective public administration consists of the management of operations and resources in a manner that encourages creativity and innovation in the development of exemplary programs and excellence in maintaining the basics of correctional management. The goal related to inmate programs and services pertains to the provision of services and programs that address inmate needs. Under the goal of building partnerships, the Bureau will continue to seek opportunities for expanding the involvement of communities and local, State, and Federal agencies in improving the effectiveness of the services it provides to offenders and constituent agencies. Strategic planning objectives for FY 1998 are also presented under the aforementioned six national goals. The work of the various Bureau offices (Central Office and Regional Offices) is described in another section of the report. Another section provides a brief profile of each of the 93 institutions that the Bureau operated as of September 30, 1997. A section on community corrections summarizes the Bureau's activities in this area and lists the names and addresses of Bureau offices that administer community corrections. The report concludes with statistical data for FY 1997; they cover inmates under Bureau jurisdiction, inmate characteristics, inmate status, inmate security level, and personnel.
