Abstract
Part One introduces basic conflict resolution theory and process and discusses conflict in the school setting as well as the limitations of the traditional approach to managing student conflicts. Part Two provides detailed chapters on all aspects of the design, implementation, and operation of a student mediation program. This includes discussions of how to secure initial support, the selection of a coordinator, program policies, training, mediation logistics, and the characteristics of an effective program. Part Three contains various resources and materials designed to teach readers about conducting a mediation program. One chapter in this section presents complete transcripts of two peer mediation sessions, one from a high school and one from a middle school. Another chapter presents 12 conflict resolution lessons and materials to assist classroom teachers in working with their students. Sample peer mediation forms are provided in one chapter, followed by a series of appendixes that include a guide to the legal issues raised by peer mediation and suggestions for organizing conferences for peer mediators.
