THIS STUDY INVESTIGATES AND ANALYZES ACTUAL CONDITIONS OF DISCIPLINARY MEASURES TAKEN AGAINST INMATES DURING NOVEMBER 1972 WITH A VIEW TO EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITY AND DESIRABILITY OF STANDARDIZING SUCH MEASURES.
Abstract
THE INFLUENCE OF 18 BASIC FACTOR ITEMS (CAUSE, MOTIVATION, PROGRESSIVE TREATMENT, ETC.) ON THE KIND OF PUNISHMENT IMPOSED IS ANALYZED ALONG WITH DIFFERENCES IN THE KINDS AND CONTENTS OF PUNISHMENT BETWEEN INSTITUTIONAL GROUPS. ALSO ANALYZED WERE INMATE REACTIONS TO THE PUNISHMENTS. STUDY FINDINGS REVEALED THAT INMATES NOT YET CLASSIFIED INTO A TREATMENT PROGRAM, THOSE WHOSE INFRACTIONS HAVE CAUSED DAMAGE, AND THOSE WITH HISTORIES OF REPEATED INFRACTIONS ARE GIVEN MORE SEVERE PUNISHMENTS. MALE INSTITUTIONS AND THOSE CATERING TO FOREIGN OFFENDERS GENERALLY IMPOSED SEVERER PUNISHMENTS. GENERALLY PUNISHMENTS IMPOSED WERE PROPORTIONAL TO THE INFRACTION COMMITTED. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT MODEL CRITERIA FOR INMATE DISCIPLINE SHOULD TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE TYPE OF INSTITUTION, THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE INFRACTION, AND THE SET OF 18 FACTOR ITEMS USED IN THE STUDY.
