Police supervisors, educators, and citizens in Michigan agreed that higher education affects police quality and effectiveness and that increased higher education in law enforcement should be mandatory.
Abstract
The groups thought 2 years of college was an adequate amount of higher education. All except police supervisors expressed moderate agreement for a 4-year educational requirement for police, while little support was indicated for 5 or more years of college. All groups strongly agreed that criminal justice and social science were the two most needed and useful fields of study for police. The strong agreement among the groups seems to show broad recognition that increased education for police is necessary and beneficial. Data are based on the results of questionnaires administered to the groups. A literature review is included. About 35 references and the questionnaire are appended. (Author abstract modified)
