METHOD OF FIREARMS IDENTIFICATION USED BY THE SPANISH POLICE LABORATORY TO SOLVE A HOMICIDE CASE INVOLVING A GUN WITH UNUSUALLY VARIABLE CARTRIDGE CASE MARKINGS.
Abstract
THE VARIATION IN MARKINGS WAS FOUND TO BE PRODUCED BY SECONDARY IMPACTS OCCURRING IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SHOT WAS FIRED, AND BY THE RECOIL OF THE CARTRIDGE CASE AGAINST THE FIRING PIN, AND BY VIBRATION. SINCE THERE WERE MINOR DEFECTS IN THE FIRING PIN HEAD AND THE RECOIL SPRING WAS WEAK, THE FIRING PIN TURNED ON ITS AXIS AND CHANGED POSITION.
