EXPLANATION OF THE PRIMARY BALLISTIC DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SUBSONIC AND SUPERSONIC BULLETS AND OF THEIR RESPECTIVE WOUNDING EFFECTS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT VELOCITY IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN A BULLET'S ENERGY AND WOUNDING EFFECT, AND THAT SUPERSONIC BULLETS ARE THOSE WHICH TRAVEL AT A VELOCITY GREATER THAN THE SPEED OF SOUND, OR MORE THAN APPROXIMATELY 1100 FEET PER SECOND. BALLISTIC AND PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS ARE DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF DAMAGE TO THE BULLET, DAMAGE TO INTERNAL BODY TISSUE, THE WOUND TRACK, AND ENTRANCE AND EXIT WOUNDS.
