EXAMINATION OF STATE LEGAL CODES TO DETERMINE THE EXISTENCE AND SUBSTANCE OF DEFINITIVE LAWS ON STANDARDS, INSPECTION, AND ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITY.
Abstract
SURVEY FINDINGS INDICATE THAT THERE ARE MANY STATES WHICH DO NOT HAVE LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY, LACK STATUTES, OR DO NOT ENFORCE STANDARDS, INSPECT FACILITIES, OR INITIATE ENFORCEMENT ACTION. THIS HANDBOOK DISCUSSES ILLUSTRATIVE STATUTORY APPROACHES, AND PRESENTS A FIFTY STATE STATUTORY PROFILE CHART. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES STATUTORY CITATIONS, EXAMPLES OF SELECTED STATE STATUTES, THE 1970 NATIONAL JAIL CENSUS, AND A REFERENCE BIBLIOGRAPHY.
