Abstract
THE AUTHOR MAINTAINS THAT UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A HIGH STANDARD OF LIVING, THE SWEDISH POLICE HAVE GROWN INTO A CENTRALIZED MODERN, TECHNICAL AND MILITARIST INSTRUMENT OF POWER. THE FOCUS ON MAINTAINING LAW AND ORDER HAS ALIENATED IT FROM THE PUBLIC. IN ORDER TO RE-ESTABLISH CONTACT WITH THE COMMUNITY, THE FOOT PATROL WAS REINTRODUCED. ALTHOUGH THE POLICEMAN ON THE BEAT HAS NO OFFICIAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR SOCIAL SERVICES, HE DOES CARRY OUT THESE KINDS OF ACTIVITIES. HE SPENDS A CONSIDERABLE PART OF HIS TIME IN CRISIS INTERVENTION, ESPECIALLY WITH REGARD TO PERSONAL PROBLEMS AND FAMILY CONFLICTS. --IN DUTCH
