Articles included in this journal issue were part of a 1994 symposium on juvenile justice in Massachusetts at which participants examined the proliferation of youth violence in cities and suburban areas and possible solutions to the problem.
Abstract
Topics of discussion at the symposium concerned procedural aspects of juvenile justice, rehabilitative efforts of courts and social service agencies, and measures to improve the juvenile justice system. Journal articles deal with the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services and the juvenile justice system, juvenile violence and the Massachusetts transfer statute, the issue of confidentiality in juvenile delinquency proceedings, and juvenile rehabilitation. Commentaries assess the court's role in juvenile justice, the need for a community response to youth violence prevention, equal protection for the mentally retarded, and alien juveniles. Finally, legal notes consider parental custody of juveniles as an alternative to pretrial juvenile detention, the civil commitment of minors to mental institutions in Massachusetts, and Department of Youth Services control over juvenile delinquent sentencing and monitoring.
