Tactical ramming is discussed from both police and security perspectives, and the author notes that the technique of ramming cars originated in the counterterrorist context.
Abstract
The ramming technique receiving a great deal of recent attention is called tactical ramming to force a car trying to overtake another car off the road. To move a vehicle from its path, the police vehicle needs to develop enough force to overcome the force holding the other vehicle on the road. Greater speeds make ramming more violent; the difference between hitting a car at 30 mph and hitting a car at 35 mph involves 40,000 foot pounds of energy, or a 20-ton difference. Procedures for carrying out the ramming technique successfully are described, and dangers associated with improper procedures are noted. The importance of professional training before attempting to use the ramming technique is stressed.
