The study clarifies the kind of acts which teachers associate with signs of delinquency and the kind of minor delinquent acts which teachers associate with delinquent boys who have committed criminal offenses.
Abstract
Both junior and senior high school teachers strongly associate taking drugs secretly or taking money from another person by threatening them with delinquency. Frequent shoplifing is not so associated with delinquency by teachers, although all three acts are crimes in Japan. Acts on which views differ between junior and senior high teachers concern wearing nonconformist clothing, breaking school rules, and smoking in school. Junior high teachers associate these acts far more highly with delinquency than do senior high teachers. More high school teachers than junior high teachers assume that the delinquent boys commit many other minor delinquent acts. Study data and references are included. (Author abstract modified)
