The article presents a summary of the presentations from the April 12, 2000 Ancillary Meeting on "Terrorist Victimization: Prevention, Control and Recovery" at the United Nations Center in Vienna, Austria.
Abstract
The authors provided an overview of the salient points of the presentations made at the conference on "Terrorist Victimization: Prevention, Control and Recovery" held on April 12, 2000. Areas presented included observations pertaining to the role of media coverage and attitudes in forming the public’s beliefs regarding the extent of terrorist activities on the world stage, the relationship between terrorist enterprises and organized crime and the state of governments’ official reaction to terrorism versus actual governmental practice in the face of actual terrorism events. A review of the aspects of terrorism victimization including discussion of the types of victimization that occur, the psychological effects of that victimization and best practices for dealing with the terror victims is provided. The state of International response to terrorism and a discussion of expected future trends concludes the article. 19 references
