Statistical results were presented from the December 2000 Time Intervals Survey on the time taken between stages of proceedings for defendants in completed criminal cases in magistrates’ courts from England and Wales.
Abstract
This report presented the results from the data of the December 2000 Time Intervals Survey and for all four 2000 Time Intervals Surveys as a whole. The survey reported on the time taken between stages of proceedings for defendants in completed criminal cases in magistrates’ courts. The report consisted of three sections. The first section included a description of the results from the December 2000 survey and 2000 overall. The second section contained tables of detailed results from the latest survey and previous surveys. The final section held methodological notes and additional information. The results presented in the report were given per defendant. Major findings on indictable cases included: (1) reduction in delay -- the average time from offense to completion fell to 110 days in 2000 from 116 in 1999; (2) charged cases -- considering only defendants who were charged the average time from charge to first listing fell to 5 days in 2000 from 18 days in 1999 and the average time from first listing to completion rose from 54 days in 1999 to 58 days in 2000; and (3) significant variation in time taken across the Magistrates' Court Committees -- the average time from first listing to completion varied from 37 for Warwickshire and 38 days for Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset to 95 days for West Midlands.
