Abstract
THE AUTHORS PRESENT A JOB ANALYSIS AND DISCUSS TRAINING OBJECTIVES, INCLUDING THE TRAITS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED TO BE EFFECTIVE IN THE SOCIAL WORK ROLE OF THE POLICE. IN ORDER TO SPECIFY THE MEANS OF MEETING THESE OBJECTIVES, CHARACTERISTICS OF POLICE APPLICANTS ARE REVIEWED. THIS SECTION DISCUSSES SOME OF THE COMMON PSYCHOMETRIC MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES USED TO STUDY THE POLICE. THE FINAL MATERIAL CONSIDERS AVAILABLE TRAINING METHODS AND COMMENTS ON PERFORMANCE EVALUATION. TRAINING IS DELIVERED IN THE CLASSROOM, IN T-GROUPS, ENCOUNTER GROUPS, AND SENSITIVITY TRAINING, ROLE PLAYING, DRAMATIZATIONS, AND ON THE JOB TRAINING. THE AUTHORS CONCLUDE WITH A FOURTEEN POINT RECOMMENDATION ON POLICE SELECTION AND TRAINING. INCLUDED ARE TABLES INDICATING ACTIVITIES INVOLVED IN A PATROLMAN'S DUTIES AND IN HIS SOCIAL ROLE, TABLES ON TESTING AND MEASUREMENT, AND A PROFILE OF THE POLICE PERSONALITY.
