Abstract
THIS TEXT PROVIDES GUIDELINES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TRAINING FUNCTION IN SMALLER POLICE DEPARTMENTS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EFFECTIVE IN-SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM IS OUTLINED AND INCLUDES THE NEED FOR AND SELECTION OF A DEPARTMENTAL TRAINING OFFICER, HIS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, THE NEED DETERMINATION PROCESS, TRAINING PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT, TRAINING PROGRAMS EVALUATION, METHODS OF INSTRUCTION, AND LESSON DEVELOPMENT. APPENDICES INCLUDE SAMPLES OF SPECIFIC TRAINING AIDS, SUCH AS A TRAINING CHECKLIST, INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT EVALUATION FORMS, AND LESSON PLAN. (SNI ABSTRACT)
