In presenting a comprehensive program of treatment for juvenile sex offenders (JSAs), this book covers every phase of treatment, from assessment to relapse prevention, based on the latest research as well as the author's years of clinical experience.
Abstract
Part I, an introduction to treating JSAs, addressed the many challenges faced by clinicians or administrators involved in JSA programs. It also discussed one of the most important aspects of treating these clients, namely, the need for a continuum of care. Part II considers the variety of issues related to the operation of a treatment program. It covers both outpatient and inpatient treatment programs, with an emphasis on residential treatment. The importance of client and staff safety, residential standards of care, treatment components, multi-modality treatment approaches, and how to set up a treatment program were discussed. It describes the best practices for serving JSAs and provides valuable information to both private clinicians and those working within residential programs. Part III addresses the basic components of treatment, from group to individual therapy. It includes detailed information on parent education and family therapy. Also discussed were the importance of establishing a milieu treatment program and how to maintain one to enhance the therapeutic setting. Part IV pertains to pretreatment and aftercare, which are vitally important to a comprehensive treatment program.
