This chapter discusses the sexual abuse of preschool boys in a developmental context and then describes treatment strategies for them.
          Abstract
Developmental symptoms of sexual abuse are identified for boys abused between birth and 18 months, 18 to 36 months, and 3 to 5 years. A discussion of the treatment of the preschool male sexual abuse victim identifies four types of skills and knowledge required of the therapist: a detailed knowledge of child development, skills in therapy with small children, skills in working with a multidisciplinary team, and a thorough working knowledge of the various models developed to describe the effects of sexual abuse and other types of trauma on children. An overview of current models and processes for treating abuse is presented. These include the model used by the Midwest Children's Resource Center, a specialty child abuse service of Children's Hospital of St. Paul, Minn., and other models used for therapeutic interventions for children from birth to 18 months, 18 to 36 months, and 3 to 5 years. Common treatment problems and approaches discussed pertain to sexual acting out, aggressive acting out, group therapy, sex education, prevention education, and dealing with the child at his developmental level. 35 references
