DATA AND OVERALL RESULTS OF A NEW LIGHTING SYSTEM FOR A TRUCK DOCK ARE COMPARED TO THE OLD SYSTEM.
Abstract
IN RECENT YEARS, THERE HAS BEEN AN ALARMING GROWTH IN THE THEFT OF GOODS IN TRANSIT, FROM WAREHOUSES, AND AT LOADING DOCKS. AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THE EASE OR DIFFICULTY OF ACCOMPLISHING A THEFT IS THE ILLUMINATION AT THE AREA IN QUESTION. FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A PROPER SYSTEM SUCH AS THE COSTS OF AN ILLUMINATION SYSTEM FOR A TRUCK DOCK ARE EXAMINED USING THE EXPERIENCE OF THE SPECTOR MID-STATES TRUCKING COMPANY OF HILLSIDE, ILLINOIS. THE TYPES OF LAMPS CONSIDERED, THEIR SPECIFICATIONS, AND THE REASONS FOR CHOOSING THE LAMP SELECTED ARE DISCUSSED. THE TYPES OF LAMPS CONSIDERED WERE THE METAL HALIDE, THE HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM, AND THE LOW PRESSURE SODIUM. LAMP EFFICACY, LUMINANCE, LUMEN MAINTENANCE, LAMP LIFE, COLOR, STARTING, VOLTAGE RISE, AND WATTAGE AND ENERGY COSTS ARE EXAMINED AND COMPARED FOR EACH OF THE LAMP TYPES. THE LOW PRESSURE SODIUM (LPS) LAMP WAS SELECTED. LIGHTING SURVEYS WERE MADE OF THE OLD AND THE NEW INSTALLATIONS AND TABULAR RESULTS ARE PRESENTED. THE ILLUMINATION WAS INCREASED TO ABOUT 6 TIMES THE FORMER VALUE AT A DISTANCE OF 60 FEET IN FRONT OF THE LUMINAIRE AND 14 TIMES AT THE SAME DISTANCE OUT AND BETWEEN LUMINAIRES. THE NEW INSTALLATION PROVIDES LIGHT BETWEEN THE PARKED TRAILERS, LIGHT FOR THE VERTICAL SURFACES TO READ TRAILER IDENTIFICATION NAMES AND NUMBERS, A HIGH LEVEL OF ILLUMINATION FOR MOVING, CONNECTING, AND DETACHING TRUCKS AND TRAILERS IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA OF THE DOCK, AND HIGHER LIGHT LEVELS FOR VISUAL SEARCH AND SCANNING BY THE SECURITY GUARDS. THIS WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITH REDUCED OPERATING COSTS. (RCB)
