Abstract
THE 20TH CENTURY HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF THE CONFLICT OVER NORTHERN IRELAND IS DISCUSSED IN THE CONTEXT OF BOTH THE CONSTITUTIONAL ISSUE AND THE PROBLEM OF SECURITY. THE DIFFERENT CATHOLIC AND PROTESTANT POLITICAL FACTIONS ARE IDENTIFIED AND DESCRIBED. THE APPENDIX PROVIDES INFORMATION ON SUCH TERRORIST AND EXTREMIST ORGANIZATIONS AS THE PROVISIONAL IRA (IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY), THE OFFICIAL IRA, THE ULSTER DEFENCE ASSOCIATION (UDA), AND THE ULSTER VOLUNTEER FORCE (UVF).
