COMPARISON OF DATA ON THE PERSONAL AND SOCIAL VALUE STRUCTURES OF POLICE OF COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS, POLICE OF LANSING, MICHIGAN, AND NON-POLICE MALES.
Abstract
THE SURVEY MEASURED TERMINAL VALUES SUCH AS AN EXCITING LIFE AND EQUALITY, AS WELL AS INSTRUMENTAL VALUES SUCH AS BROADMINDED AND CAPABLE. THE COOK COUNTY RESULTS ARE COMPARED TO THOSE OF A PRIOR SURVEY OF LANSING (MICH.) POLICE AND A SIMILAR NATIONAL SAMPLE OF WHITE MALES. GREATER IMPORTANCE WAS ATTACHED BY BOTH POLICE SAMPLES TO PERSONAL VALUES OVER SOCIAL VALUES, INDICATING GREATER PERSONAL AND LESS SOCIAL ORIENTATION. FURTHER, THE COOK COUNTY POLICE, REPRESENTING A LARGE METROPOLITAN AREA, SHOWED A WIDER DIFFERENTIAL IN THIS RESPECT THAN EITHER THE LANSING OR NATIONAL SAMPLES. THE HEAVY WORKLOAD AND ISOLATION OF POLICE WORK, THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ENFORCING UNPOPULAR LAWS (EG. TRAFFIC, VICE), LEGAL CONSTRAINTS, AND SELECTIVE RECRUITMENT ARE DISCUSSED AS CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS EMPHASIS ON PERSONAL VALUES.
