This article describes state-of-the-art communications equipment, particularly intercom systems, in three correctional systems: Utah State Penitentiary, Orange County Sheriff's Department in California; and the Potosi Correctional Center southwest of St. Louis, Mo.
Abstract
All systems described are stand-alone, duplex systems that work without push-to-talk buttons. In the Utah penitentiary, surveillance and control are maintained by one individual in a secure central control room. The article describes the control room panel, intercoms, and computer systems. The overview of the three-part maximum security complex operated by the Orange County Sheriff's Department, focuses on prowler and staff intercoms. Potosi is a new, maximum security detention center that will house 500 inmates when completed. Architectural design, evolution of its intercom system, and personal alarms are examined.
